Hong Kong Island reigns at 2018 Battle of Origin

Hong Kong Island Men’s and Women’s teams have once again beaten off tough competition from Kowloon & New Territories to win the HKTag Battle of Origin.

The Islanders are now undefeated for three years running: from the 2016 mixed, 2017 men’s and women’s to 2018 men’s and women’s games. Kowloon & New Territories put forward a huge effort in both 2018 events, making this the closest ever matches in the HKTag Battle of Origin three-year history.

In the men’s match, Kowloon & New Territories were up 3-2 at half-time; but Hong Kong Island – captained by Simon Acton – turned the game around in the second half, scoring three tries in quick succession soon after the whistle. The Hong Kong Island women’s team – captained by Anna Burns – was pushed all the way to the end, finally winning the game a very close 6-5 at the final whistle.

The 2018 Battle of Origin took place on Saturday 7 July 2018 at King’s Park Sports Ground. Loosely based on the NRL State of Origin concept, this HKTag domestic tournament pits residents of Kowloon and the New Territories against Hong Kong Islanders, in a tussle for the top spot.

The next tag rugby event in Hong Kong takes place next Saturday, 14 July, in Discovery Bay.
